Behind The Scenes with Guest Designer Carmen Soo

Updated: Jul 19, 2019

Name: Carmen Soo

Day job: Actress/Model

Charity: WEDU Global

Personal style: Comfortable , girly and classic looks.

Tell us about the charity you chose. Why did you choose Wedu Global as your charity of choice?

I chose Wedu Global, as it’s a project that my good friend, Pat, is developing. Wedu helps young women in developing countries afford an education, which is helping to change their lives and futures. Wedu has both operational overheads and funds that they loan out to the girls. The money we raise can go to either, as both are important.

What inspired the design of your jeans?

I’m a new mum and I'm still actively working, so I need something that I can wear on set as well as can be comfortable. I wanted jeans that go to my mid-calf, as it will be easier for them to stay clean when I’m shooting on location. At home, I want jeans that are a little loose so I can be free and comfortable to play with my baby.

What is your favourite special feature(s) of your jeans?

I can be a little bit girly sometimes, so I couldn’t resist working some pink thread and pockets into my jeans design.

Where will you wear your jeans?

I’ll be wearing them both at home, as well as to and from any sets I’m working on.

What did you like about the process of creating your jeans?

I was filming on set when HST approached me to do the “My Jeans, My Charity” project, and I was going to be busy right up until the launch day. What was really amazing about the process of making my jeans was that I was able to do it without ever visiting the HST’s workshop! We talked about the design via video conference, while I browsed the fabric that was on the website. I then shared my measurements which the wardrobe person on set took, and they made the prototype jeans. HST then sent them to me via courier - I tried them on and talked about some improvements over a second video conference. I then sent them back and they finished them. I still can’t believe how well they fit!

What would you be interested in designing next?

I would want to make a denim trench dress!
