Behind The Scenes with Guest Designer Joe Augustin

Name: Joe Augustin

Day job: Emcee; professional speaker

Charity: Muscular Dystrophy Association Singapore (MDAS)

Personal style: Comfortable, relaxed

Tell us about the charity you chose. Why did you choose MDAS as your charity of choice?

I chose the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore (MDAS). They support those who suffer from Muscular Dystrophy and their families; helping to create activities for both. It’s about the caregivers as well as the patients themselves. They aim to create opportunities for those suffering from MD - as far as I know, they do have some staff in their offices who also suffer from MD, making sure they have a place in society.

What inspired the design of your jeans?

I wear jeans a lot, and I have just a few favourite ones that I wear all the time; even on stage. So, I want these jeans to be comfortable and accommodating to my job as an emcee and professional speaker. I sometimes need to wear bulky mic-pack transmitters when I’m using handsfree microphones, so designing my jeans with that in mind is what inspired the design of my jeans. I definitely want my jeans to be stage-appropriate, so pockets are a big deal. I also carry everything I need with me in my pockets - keys, headphones, sanitiser, wallet, phone - much to the dismay of my wife.

What is your favourite special feature(s) of your jeans?

My favourite special feature of my jeans are the secret pockets sewn into it. Since I am on stage a lot and sometimes use microphones that are handsfree, I need to have a mic-pack clipped somewhere on my person. So, having a secret pocket to hide the mic-pack transmitter would be really cool.

Where will you wear your jeans?

I would definitely wear them on stage. As far as attire goes, I try to prevent myself from wearing a tie on stage. If I really have to, I will, but usually, I wear jeans, a nice shirt and a jacket over it to an event one could define as “chic”. At formal events, I will wear proper pants, but for the most part, I wear jeans to most of the events I host/emcee - I’m happy that I can make it work with jeans.

What did you like about the process of creating your jeans?

I really liked the level of detail that goes into taking the measurements for the customisation of process. I've had some custom-made clothes done before, but I have never seen so much attention being given to just the measurement process. For example, when making a jacket here, the tailor takes note of the smallest of details like the slope of your shoulders. Clothes would fit so much more comfortably that way.

What will you custom-make next?

A new jacket from HST would be marvellous. I wear a lot of jackets when I emcee events, so having another custom-made jacket that fits me like a glove would be excellent!
